Halifax, Nova Scotia (August 23, 2022) – McInnes Cooper today announced a merger with The Breton Law Group, adding significant resources, experience and talent to a firm which is already among the 25 largest law firms in Canada.
“This merger pairs a team of top legal professionals in Cape Breton with the industry leading knowledge and regional, national and global reach of our firm”, says McInnes Cooper Managing Partner Kevin Kiley. “We saw a strategic opportunity to combine our respective strengths in an important and growing market with strong economic activity which has a need for access to premier legal and advisory services”.
The merger cements McInnes Cooper as a law firm leader in Northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton — the only one of the “Atlantic Big Three” with an office in these markets.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity to expand our service offerings to existing and prospective clients at both firms,” states James Gogan, Partner at The Breton Law Group. “I am optimistic about the opportunity for the continued success this merger represents for Cape Breton, our clients, and our team.”
Jack Graham, Chair of the Board at McInnes Cooper, says the merger supports the firm’s ambitious five-year business plan, MC Reimagined, focused on Business Growth, Engagement, and Innovation. “We’re excited to announce this merger. Many of our lawyers have deep roots in Cape Breton and we feel that the merger will be truly beneficial to both firms. We have very strong shared values as well as a commitment to excellence in the way we service the needs of our clients.”
The Breton Law Group is currently comprised of five partners, three associates, and fourteen staff, and boasts an impressive portfolio spanning municipalities, energy, telecommunications, education, and important work with Indigenous communities.
McInnes Cooper’s nearly 200 lawyers and more than 200 professional resources will provide a rich pool of collaborative experience for The Breton Law Group’s roster of clients.
The merger is effective on September 6, 2022, and the merged firm will continue as McInnes Cooper.
