It is with great sadness that McInnes Cooper shares the news of the passing of our friend and former colleague, George MacDonald. George practiced as a lawyer with McInnes Cooper for 45 years of his 53-year career, and he had many strong relationships with our current and former members.
George was the nineteenth lawyer to join McInnes Cooper & Robertson and became a nationally-respected litigator with wide experience and dozens of reported decisions. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and of the Canadian College of Construction Law Lawyers, he is remembered for his high levels of professionalism, respect and courtesy both in and out of the court room. George often referred to his work as Commission Counsel to the Royal Commission on the Donald Marshall, Jr. Prosecution as likely the most important and professionally satisfying experience of his career. His work as counsel to the investors in Coughlan, et al. v. Westminer Holdings Canada Limited, a matter which went to trial for almost 100 days, set new costs standards which continue to be referred to even now. George retired from McInnes Cooper in 2015.
In addition to being a remarkable lawyer, George was an incredible mentor. George always made time to discuss matters thoroughly and provide advice.
While George was hard working, he also embraced all of the fun things about life. His room at any Firm retreat was where you would find live music and late-night sing-songs. He also loved to spend time at his family farm in Wallace, where he entertained many colleagues over the years.
Our condolences to all who knew George. The practice has lost a remarkable advocate, colleague, mentor and gentleman.
